What a filtration certification actually means
Of the 27 models tracked here, 0 carry a published, scoped filtration-performance certification. This page explains why that number is small, and what to look for instead.
The standards that actually test filtration
NSF/ANSI (developed with the American National Standards Institute) is the reference standard family for drinking-water treatment devices in most certification programmes. The ones relevant to home purifiers:
- NSF/ANSI 42 — aesthetic effects: chlorine taste and odour, particulate reduction. Does not test health-related contaminants.
- NSF/ANSI 53 — health effects: specific contaminants like lead, cysts, or VOCs, but only the exact contaminants the manufacturer submitted the unit for testing against.
- NSF/ANSI 58 — reverse osmosis systems: total dissolved solids reduction and related RO-specific claims.
A certification covers only what was tested
None of these standards is a blanket “this purifier is safe/effective” stamp. A unit certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction says nothing about its bacteria removal unless it was separately tested and certified for that claim too. That's why this dataset never records a bare “NSF certified” — every certification entry carries the brand's own published scope wording, or it isn't recorded at all.
Why this column is mostly empty here
Two things are true at once in Singapore. First, PUB (the national water agency) already treats tap water to a standard suitable for direct consumption and tests it continuously — see PUB's water quality page. Second, most purifier brands selling into Singapore simply don't publish an NSF/ANSI (or equivalent scoped) certification for their units — filtration claims are usually marketing copy ("removes 99.9% of contaminants") without a named testing standard or a public test report attached.
What brands publish instead is frequently mistaken for a filtration certification. Researching this dataset turned up recurring examples we deliberately did not record under a model's certifications:

The recurring patterns behind those exclusions:
- Singapore's “Safety Mark” — a general electrical/consumer-product compliance mark, not a water-filtration performance test. Several models in this dataset display a Safety Mark number; none of them are recorded as filtration certifications.
- Design awards (e.g. a “German Design Award”) judge industrial design, not filtration performance.
- Third-party lab spot-tests — a single submitted water sample tested by a lab (e.g. SGS) can show real results, but it is not the same as a standing certification against a named standard, and brands sometimes say so explicitly in their own small print.
What to look for
A genuine filtration-performance certification names the standard (e.g. “NSF/ANSI 53”), the certifying body, and the specific contaminant(s) or claim(s) tested — and you can usually look up the certificate. Anything short of that — a bare “certified purifier” claim, a design award, a generic safety mark — is not evidence of filtration performance, whatever else it's evidence of.
